Career, Leadership and Community Building

Modern Storytelling Revival in Singapore

From 1998, Sheila and Kiran Shah played a leading role in launching and nurturing Singapore’s modern oral storytelling revival. Through performances, training and opportunities for storytellers to meet, practise and exchange knowledge, they helped establish oral storytelling as a professional practice and nurtured a community that continues today.

Co-founded Singapore’s first storytelling circle with Kiran Shah, giving storytellers a place to practise, exchange knowledge and learn from one another.

Co-founded the company with Kiran Shah, creating opportunities for performances, education programmes and professional development.

2000 – 2006 | Asian Congress of Storytellers

Played a leading role in organising the Congress and its accompanying showcases, helping shape programmes and coordinate with storytellers and workshop leaders from around the world. Named Co-Congress Director in 2006.

2006 – present | Storytelling Association (Singapore)

Founding member. Served three terms as President, three terms as Vice-President and two terms as Workshop Chair; continues to serve on the Executive Committee.

2009 – present | Storywise

Founded Storywise to deliver storytelling performances, workshops and professional development for educators, organisations, community groups, museums and heritage institutions.

March 2017 – July 2022 | Story Connection

Co-founded Story Connection with Roger Jenkins to develop community storytelling initiatives, including the 398.2 Storytelling Festival and the Story Carnival at Enabling Village. The Carnival celebrated diversity and inclusion through storytelling performances, workshops and personal-story sharing, featuring performers with visual and hearing impairments alongside other storytellers. It also involved secondary school students trained to lead tours of Enabling Village.

Federation of Asian Storytellers (FEAST)

Sheila co-founded FEAST, a volunteer-run non-profit company that brings together an international community of storytellers for learning, mentorship, cultural exchange and collaboration. As a founding director, she contributes to organisational development, professional learning, international collaboration and community initiatives.

International Conferences

FEAST has organised five international storytelling conferences in Singapore (2018), Bangalore (2019), Jakarta (2023), Suwon, South Korea (2024), and Chennai (2026). As a core organiser of all five, Sheila has contributed to programme planning, liaison with workshop leaders, coordination of information required for international participants’ conference approvals and visa arrangements, and the design of conference materials.

Professional Development and Learning Communities

Sheila has a leading role in FEAST’s ten-week Fundamentals of Oral Storytelling (FOOS) course, teaching three of the ten modules in its third run in 2026. She conceived and drove the Learning Communities initiative and planned and co-facilitated the inaugural community on Teaching Storytelling in 2026. Through monthly group sessions, storytellers learn from one another and explore the entire workshop process, from understanding potential clients’ needs and managing client relationships to preparing proposals, designing workshops and facilitating them effectively.

She also contributes to FEAST’s wider work in learning, mentorship, exchange and collaboration alongside other volunteers who lead individual initiatives.

Oral Traditions, Heritage, Museums and Galleries

Researching and Adapting Folktales from Oral Traditions

Most of Sheila’s repertoire draws on oral traditions. Her practice includes researching source material and adapting Asian and world folktales for oral performance, while respecting their cultural contexts and making the stories accessible to contemporary audiences.

Words of My Youth: Passing on Our Oral Heritage, an NAC Silver Arts Project, encouraged seniors to collect, perform and share Chinese dialect nursery rhymes and the memories, games and childhood experiences associated with them. The project supported participants in becoming active custodians of their own oral traditions.

Storytelling in Museums, Galleries and Heritage

Sheila has trained docents across multiple museums and heritage institutions in using storytelling to interpret artworks, artefacts and exhibitions and engage visitors. She was the introductory trainer for National Gallery Singapore’s inaugural docent training programme and has delivered storytelling training for docents across various museums. Her wider work includes developing exhibition-specific performances and storytelling programmes for National Heritage Board museums, as well as creating the original story “Mei Ling’s War” from eyewitness accounts held by the National Archives of Singapore.

Education and Educator Development

Sheila has trained thousands of educators across the education spectrum, from preschool teachers and primary and secondary school teachers to tertiary lecturers. Early childhood education is a particular focus: she trains preschool educators to tell stories to young children. She uses oral storytelling and reading aloud to develop language and the foundations of literacy, while nurturing imagination, thinking, confidence and social-emotional development.

Her storytelling programmes have been endorsed in every cycle of the National Arts Council Arts Education
Programme (NAC AEP) since 2003, spanning more than two decades of work through her storytelling practice
and Storywise. She and Kiran Shah were the first storytelling practitioners invited by NAC to apply, following the
Council’s observation of their work.
